Archana Adhav disqualifies for intentionally blocking

The jury of appeal of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship today disqualified Indian 800m runner Archana Adhav from the race under rule 163.2 (b) for intentionally blocking fellow runner and awarded the gold and silver medals to Sri Lanka.

Following a protest from Sri Lanka, the jury viewed the video of the race and concluded that the Indian blocked the path of one of the two Sri Lankan with a couple of metres to go for the finish.

The disqualification of Archana meant Japanese runner Fumika Omori got the bronze medal in 2:06.50.

The gold went to Nimili Arachchige of Sri Lanka who clocked 2:05.23s. Gayanthika Abeyrathne also of Sri Lanka was awarded the silver medal for her effort of 2:05.27s.

The Result (revised)800m: 1. Nimili Arachchige (Sri) 2:05.23s, 2. Gayanthika Abeyrathne (Sri) 2:05.27s, 3. Fumika Omori (Jpn) 2:06.50.
