The Centre has rejected the Odisha government’s request to grant prospecting mining license to South Korean steel major Posco for its proposed 12 billion dollar mega steel plant near Paradip in Odisha.
Talking to media persons at Bhubaneswar Thursday , Odisha’s Steel and Mines Minister Prafulla Mallick said that the Centre has made it clear that Posco, like others, has to take part in the open auction to get Khandadhar or any other mines.
Earlier, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had requested the Centre to exempt Posco from the auction process in view of the commitments made to the company both by the Centra and state government.
However, Union Steel and Mines Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, in a letter to the Odisha Chief Minister, has said all mines will have to be auctioned as per the amendment to the MMDR Act passed by the Parliament recently.
Posco was previously promised by the Odisha government for the Khandadhar iron ore mine in Sundergarh district for its mega steel plant.
