Odisha to develop Hockey Stadium to host World Cup

The Hockey Practising field at Kalinga Stadium here would be developed as a Hockey stadium to host the 2018 World Hockey Cup (Men) and the international Hockey league scheduled to be held from December 1 to 10 this year.

Presiding over a preparatory committee meeting for the hockey matches, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi said new galleries would be constructed on the north and south side of the stadium to accommodate 20,000 more visitors.

At present the hockey stadium has a capacity to hold 9,000 audience.The world Hockey Cup is scheduled to be held from November to December 2018.

Around 25,000 players, guests and officials from 16 countries are expected to participate in the world Hockey cup that is scheduled to be played for three long weeks.The meeting Monday decided to widen the roads inside the stadium, set up food courts and construct recreation halls for the convenience of the visitors and to complete the work by October next year.

A decision was also taken to link the world cup hockey matches with the cultural functions and functions organized by the Tourism department at Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar and to launch online booking system for accommodations of foreigners in the hotels and guest houses.

The international Hockey league will be organized from December 1 to December 10 this year. In addition to host India teams from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, Netherlands and Spain are scheduled to participate. As many as 22 matches are scheduled to be played.
