18 April, Kolkata

The Election for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has ended amidst reports of violence. Over 62 percent polling was recorded at the end of the polling. The State Election Commissioner Susanta Ranjan Upadhyay said that voting was by and large peaceful.

According to official sources, bomb hurling and firing incidents, damage of EVM, ransacking of political party’s camp offices marked today’s civic polls. Police arrested 58 persons in connection with various charges.

Opposition political parties have termed the poll as a farce. They alleged large scale rigging, booth capturing and false voting by the ruling Trinamul Congress supporters in the presence of police.

Opposition parties have also criticised the State Election Commission for alleged failure to conduct free and fair polling. However, ruling Trinamul Congress has rejected the opposition’s charges.
