President Pranab Mukherjee today led the nation in paying homage to the architect of Indian constitution Dr. B R Ambedkar on his 124th birth anniversary. Mukherjee offered floral tributes at the statue of Dr Ambedkar at the Parliament House Lawns in New Delhi.
Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot also offered tributes to Dr. Ambedkar.
Revered as a great social reformer, Dr. Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891 at Mhow in Madhya Pradesh. He dedicated his entire life for the upliftment of the deprived section of the society.
As a member of the constitution drafting committee Baba Saheb provided constitutional guarantees and protections for a wide range of civil liberties for individual citizens. This includes the freedom of religion, the abolition of untouchability and the outlawing of all forms of discrimination.
Various events across the country are being organized to mark the day. In the National Capital, the main function is being held at the Parliament House premises. Floral tributes were paid at the portrait of B R Ambedkar Tuesday in the in the central hall of parliament on the occasion of his 124th birth anniversary.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambi Durai, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha P. J. Kurien, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and former Deputy Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Ethics Committee of Lok Sabha LK Advani led parliamentarians in paying tributes. Senior officers of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats also paid floral tributes. A booklet containing the profile of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, brought out by the Lok Sabha Secretariat was presented to the dignitaries.
Congress has announced a year-long celebrations to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar. Briefing media in New Delhi, party leader Sushil Kumar Shinde said the celebrations will start Tuesday at Military Headquarter of War , Mhow in Madhya Pradesh.
