President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said nation must be vigilant in the face of vigilantes and mob frenzy. He said people must pause to reflect when an individual is lynched because of some alleged violation of law.
He was speaking on the occasion of release of commemorative publication of National Herald in New Delhi to celebrate 70 years of India’s independence. Mr Mukherjee said India is a country of huge diversity with people living in peace and harmony. He said the freedom struggle was a struggle against oppression and today’s struggle is to defeat the demons of poverty, hunger and disease.
Speaking on the occasion, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said the culture of vigilantes is encouraging rising intolerance in the country. She said India has reached a crossroad marked by authoritarianism. She said it is a duty of the citizens to to pull away the prevalent hypocrisy and reveal the reality.
