Quit India debat: Thambidurai rakes up regional language issue

09 August, New Delhi

Senior AIADMK leader and Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambiduraitoday raked up the language issue during the debate to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Quit India movement.

While Dr Thambidurai started speaking in Tamil in the Lower House there was no translation available and as members complained about it, the senior member complained: “While I listen to speeches made in Hindi or in English, I cannot speak in Tamil”.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said had he (Thambidurai) given notice that he would speak in Tamil, a translator would have been certainly arranged. Under the established norms, Members have to give prior notice if they want to speak in regional languages and then translators are arranged.

The Deputy Speaker later started delivering his speech in English.
