US Open: Sania Mirza, Martina Hingis Storm Into Women’s Doubles Final

In Tennis, Sania Mirza and her Swiss team-mate Martina Hingis have stormed into the Women’s Doubles Final of the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season. In the semi-finals this morning, the Indo-Swiss pair defeated the Italian team of Sara Errani and Flavia Pennetta in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

In Mixed Doubles, the duo of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis also made it to the Final. In a match played a short while ago, the 4th seeded Indo-Swiss pair defeated the Indo-Taiwanese pair of Rohan Bopanna and Yung-Jan Chan.

In Men’s Singles, world number two Roger Federer defeated Richard Gasquet of France to set up a semi-clash with fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka. Wawrinka beat South African Kevin Anderson.

In Women’s Singles, fifth seeded Czech Petra Kvitova also crashed out. The two-time Wimbledon winner was stunned in the quarterfinals last night by 26th placed Italian Flavia Pennetta. In the semi-finals, Penetta will meet world number two Simona Halep who defeated Victoria Azarenka in the other quarterfinal.
